Why aren't there animals on all our embankments?
VS Why bother with a brushcutter all summer?

Mainly because the breeder cannot divide his herd into a multitude of small teams. What's more, building small pens takes time. Breeders already have a lot of work to do and they need to make the most of it.

They even graze on steep terrain, including woody plants and scrub, making them ideal for clearing overgrown areas.

The Mont Blanc Fermes Peda association works on areas where farmers have been unable to intervene on their own.

Let's get round the agricultural obstacles to go further

MAKE THE MOST OF EXISTING FORAGE

All our grassland is fodder for our animals. At present, the green space services are paid to use mechanical tools to cut this ‘food’ without valorising it. This recent technique in human history has a financial and ecological cost.

IMPROVE DIVERSITY

In the history of our societies, animals have always been brought to all green spaces to combat encroachment (invasion by forests), maintain diversity by preventing invasive plants from developing and enrich the soil with their excrement.

PRODUCE FOOD

From milk to meat, wool to soap, farm animals feed us. By allowing them to graze in new areas, we increase their production, lower the price of the product for sale, and allow the farmer to use other plots for haymaking.

PROMOTING AGRICULTURE

Integrating agriculture into the heart of our urban spaces means raising awareness and reconnecting with farm animals. It also means improving farmers' quality of life and enabling them to produce more to feed us better.

The place

Identify the space and prepare to receive the most suitable animals. Choosing and purchasing farm equipment.

Monitoring/care

Twice-weekly monitoring of grass conditions and movement of animals according to growth. Management of salt, water and battery recharging.

Winter management

The animals are only with you for the good times! In winter, they return to the farmer and produce. You don't have to deal with the winter period and the animals are back in the spring.

Integration into the team

There will be time for discussions with the teams and a visit to the farmer. The rules governing relations and the agricultural context are presented to ensure a real collective and sustainable project.

Spring

Goats eat the leaves and prune the stems, even on overgrown, sloping ground. Pigs uproot, clean up and eat rhizomes.

Summer

Goats eat the foliage, so avoid overgrowth. They can graze large areas quickly and prevent the flowers from pollinating. Pigs can strip the land bare, with or without supplementary feeding.

Autumn

The pigs plough the land to allow new planting of native plants. Goats can prevent regrowth.

Complete management

Pigs and goats complement each other and can be used to limit and make the most of invasive plants. The reduced cost of management, however, adds value to a local initiative and increases food production in the Chamonix region.
